More than just memes: Reflections on HUAWEI – 3 things we should learn

Today, social media is flooded with memes referencing the notorious problems facing HUAWEI, which made me reflect on a few things:

  1. Don’t depend 100% on a single vendor.
In the cloud era, we all think of the cloud as a cutting-edge alternative, offering resource optimization, efficiency, scalability, and security. We take for granted that the cloud, this “ethereal” space, will always be there, but of course, when we talk about the cloud, we think of Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

All our services, our infrastructure, are in the hands of a third party, and if circumstances change, could the same thing happen to us as to HUAWEI? What if one day you find yourself without access to Amazon, Google, or Microsoft?

If your revenue depends on these platforms, how do you survive?

  1. Always think about business continuity.

We all envision the growth of our businesses, but if circumstances change, are we prepared to ensure business continuity? We are so immersed in technology that we are unaware that we are tied to a technological monopoly.

Our data, our emails, our services, our storage—almost everything, if not everything—is in the hands of a third party. Is your organization prepared to respond to a crisis? Do we have a business continuity plan (BCP)?

  1. How to innovate without depending on a third party.

The biggest question is: how can we innovate without depending on the dominant technology of the moment? Would your GPS app stop working without the Google Maps API? Would your artificial intelligence be “intelligent” without Amazon’s AI modules?

WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF APPARENT TECHNOLOGICAL FREEDOM, WHERE OUR KNOWLEDGE AND INNOVATION ARE BEING LIMITED TO THE INTEGRATION OF SERVICES FROM TECHNOLOGICAL MONOPOLIES.
